Main Task: Evaluation

Main Task:Filming

After preparing my filming with plans and a complete run through guide I was able to complete my filming very well and efficiently. I ensured that I was following my plan very closely to make sure that I did all the right shots that I was intending to use. I ensured that I had the correct equipment and filmed at the right time to make sure that I followed and kept continuity. I also prepared the make up and costume just as I planned in order to keep to my continuity. Images of the finished characters are seen bellow:

Main Task: Planning & Research

In preparation for my film in need to ensure that I have thought out the planning completely. This would ensure that I have everything prepared so that it would all to to plan.

Cast
For my film I have decided to use six characters. This is because my film is set at a party.
Main character- Ellisia Freeman
for this role I have chosen to dress them in dark 'punk' like clothes. This creates the feel that the character is young and reckless. I also decided that in order to create this I must also use dark heavy make-up this shows that they are down, if I also blurred it around the eyes it would show that they are in an unstable state- not caring how they appear.
For Edith I decided that in order to make her look as if she is very old and creepy I would have to find a costume that would match this for example:
  • Dressing gown
  • Long dark coat
  • Black top and trousers
  • Night Gown
All of these ideas would need to be messed up, this would make it look like she had been there a long time and is very old. It also creates the sense that she could have been in allot of danger as she would look like the conventional horror film character. Some examples of this would be films such as 'The Ring' and 'The Grudge'. I have taken these ideas and tried to put them into my own character.
Therefore I have chosen to go with the idea of the night gown. This connotes the idea of night and darkness, with this brings fear and the knowing of danger.
For my other characters i have chosen to dress them in simple, modern day clothing. This would cannote that they are young. As some of them them would be in much lighter, more floral clothing than my main character this would also cannote that some of the characters are more young and innocent than her, therefore making them look more vaunerable.

Shots
In order to ensure that when i do my filming I have everything planned and devised ready I must have all the planning completed. This includes knowing how I am going to frame my shots. I must ensure that the shots that I used create tension and suspense. This is because I need to build things up until my final scene. In order to do this I could use the following shots:

  • Shot reverse shot: This shot shows one persons view then cuts to another and then back through to the original person. This is often used in conversation.
  • Jump cut: This shot shows two sequential shots of the same thing. But then the other is varied. This creates the effect of a jump, this would therefore draw attention to this and show the audience that something is not quite right. It can also be used to show that the person is disorientated and drunk if shown through there perspective.
  • Cross-cutting: In this shot it shows one scene and then cuts through to another. This has the effect that the action is following on. However it can also be used to how different pieces of action that may be happening at the same time. Therefore showing two separate pieces of action. Therefore showing all the action at the times and places as the occur.
  • Insert shot: This shot shows the audience something that is filmed in a different frame to show a different aspect to this. For example if there is a shot of someone opening a door the camera might show the person walking up to a door going up to it and then an insert-shot of the persons hand on the handle opening it, and then back to the person walking into the place.
  • Dissolve: This transaction shows two separate shots that are blended together to show the process of one shot coming through another shot.
Scripts
In order for me to know what shot i need to do at each time I devised a rough run through plan of the shots, transactions and speech that I was going to use in my filming. This is shown in the image's bellow:

By having this guide i am able to follow what I need to do and in what order I need to do it. However this is only a rough guide on what to do so if I feel that something wont go well and the shot doesn't go right i can change this and try to succeed with continuity.

However to ensure that the shots that I have tried to use are framed exactly how I want them to be i have created a brief storyboard outlining how I want my shots to look.
In the beginning of my film I aim to introduce the characters. I aim to do this with a series of shots with cross-fade transitions that will show each character applying make-up or doing there hair. Similar to the image to the left.

In my second scene I need to try and establish something that looks like a mad party. I decided to look into this by following an example of E4's series 'Skins'. In there party scenes they have various shots showing young teenage behaviour. Such as drinking, drugs and smoking. I decided that in order to try to make my scene look as similar to this as possible I need to show alcohol in the scene and make my characters look very drunk. To do this I decided that I could get empty bottles of alcohol and fill them with water, this creates the effect of drinking and being drunk without my actors having to consume any alcohol.
I also made notes on the way that the cameras are used. These are as follows:
  • Low lighting
  • Quick fast-paced cuts
  • Loud music
  • Fast uncoordinated dancing
  • Characters wobbling around
  • Eyes not focused on any particular point
  • Camera shaking
  • Cuts from one character to another
  • Jump cuts
  • loss of camera focus
I need to ensure that I think about each one of these things when filming to ensure that I create the best effect possible. By looking at various examples from films and video's of parties I am able to see what is conventional in order for me to follow these examples to create my overall desired effect.

Soundtrack
For the soundtrack to my film I need to follow the conventional features to the beginning to minutes of a film. As i have chosen to introduce my characters in the scene I think that it would be a good idea if i was to put a soundtrack over the top of the beginning. This would open the film with a fast paced feel. It would also help to show that they are at a party.
For my song i need to consider what sort of party it is as there are various song genre's that would cater for this scene. However as my characters are young i decided that a song that is filled with allot of bass would cater well.
To try and find the right song i started by looking through my 'iTunes' library. I went onto different genre's of song and went through them to select a top 5 songs that i feel would be good for my film these are as follows:
  1. Crank it up-Hadouken
  2. Pieces- Chase&Status
  3. M.A.D- Hadouken
  4. Saturday night- Borgore
  5. Act like Ho-Borgore
Once I have done my filming and editing i will be able to see which of these songs would best fit my film.

As my film is a horror I must also think about incorporating some kind of sinister soundtrack, as this is seen in a conventional horror film. Used to create suspense and horror.
By watching various films with suspense I was able to find two soundtracks that use sinister music that i could use.
These are:
  • Lord of the Rings
  • The Ring
  • Kill Bill
  • The Grudge
  • Silent Hill

Filming arrangements
I must also ensure that when I do my filming I take into consideration the time and weather. I could therefore tell all my actors to be at the house for 4.30 this would give me time to ensure that each actor is comfortable with everything that they have to say and they know what they are doing, and when.
Giving around about an hour for all the preparations to take place including hair and make-up i can begin to do my filming. Throughout the time that they are getting ready I would be able to film small quick shots of my characters getting ready; just as they would do if they were going to a real party.
By the time that i have done this i would be able to ensure that the light outside is dark, this would show continuity as if i weren't to do this and I began filming when it begins to get dark, some of my filming would be in light and others darkness.
I also need to ensure that all my cast shows up for filming. This means ensuring that i am organised and have a specific time and date for filming.

My Target Audience
The target audience for my film is ages 15+. This means that I must ensure that nothing in my film will violate what is in the age certificate set by the BBFC (British board of film classification) the intendant regulator of film and video industry in the UK. These are as follows:

Discrimination
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory
language or behaviour.
Drugs
Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not
promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily
accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example,
aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.
Horror
Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic
or sexualised.
Imitable behaviour
Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and
self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be
copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.
Language
There may be frequent use of strong language (for example,
‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be
acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated
use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.
Nudity
Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without
strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a
non-sexual or educational context.
Sex
Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail.
There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour,
but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable
unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is
sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.
Theme
No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is
appropriate for 15 year olds.
Violence
Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction
of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to
be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also
unlikely to be acceptable.
There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence
but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and
have a strong contextual justification.

I must ensure that I follow these guidelines in my film to ensure that i cater for my target audience in the best way possible.

Main task:Make-up

Hair&make-up
For my film the make-up that i use is very important as the horror character needs too be very scary. There are various ways that i am able too achieve this such as dark eyes; these make the person look dark and mysterious. I can also add darkness to the persons face, this would also make them look much darker. It also gives the effect that the person has been roughed up and in previous conflict. I decided that hair is also an important issue. Hair that has been brought in front of the face can also make a person look evil as shown in 'The Ring'. I can try too archive this effect by wetting the hair and combing it forwards. I can then add hairspray too this too create a much more greasy and messed up effect. After testing this process i decided that this look would be most effective for my film.

Main Task:Blood

Fake blood
For my film i must ensure that the effects that i use look realistic. This would include the blood that i am using. I did an experiment with the blood that i purchaced and added water too it so that i can see if it would create the best effect for my film. This works well as seen in the images.

Main task: Sountrack

Soundtack
For my film i must ensure that the music and soundtrack that i use fits with the genre and what is happening at that time. As my film is a horror i must use a song that would create tension for the audience. As the setting for my film is set at a girls slumber party i must also ensure that i use songs that are conventional for that age group. I have therefore chosen a track that is very cheesy as the girls are able to have fun and dance around to. I can show that the girls are inocent by the dances that they are doing and show how vaunerable they are. The girls are therefore able to show how much fun they are having. So the missing girl would seem to be in much more harm as the girls do not understand the danger that they are actually in.
